Category 1 landfill for hazardous waste

Incineration ashes, residues from the physicochemical installations and other solid and non-toxic waste are disposed of in the category 1 landfill in Antwerp. Indaver has constructed the landfills on its own sites according to the best available technologies, guaranteeing responsible storage and eliminating the need for transportation to another site.

Which waste substances are allowed in the landfill?

  • Residual substances from incineration and/or treatment of waste;
  • hazardous waste substances after the necessary pre-treatment;
  • asbestos-containing waste;
  • hazardous industrial waste;
  • exceptional waste comparable to hazardous industrial waste due to its nature or composition;
  • hazardous rubble and scrap materials, including asbestos cement.

Composition and leaching behaviour of dumped waste

  • The transported waste should be solid so that the landfill remains accessible and stable;
  • the waste should mainly be inorganic and must comply with a number of requirements concerning its composition.

Soil and groundwater protection

The landfill is built in such a way as to minimise the impact on the environment.

First, an impenetrable mineral layer is laid and on top of this is laid a 2.5mm thick HDPE foil. Thanks to an electronic leak-detection system, Indaver can check the water-tightness of this foil regularly.

Drainage pipelines are installed under the foil to check the water quality. Leachate shafts leading to a drainage pipe network are placed on the foil to pump away the rainwater. This pumped-off leachate is reused as process water in the solidification process.

After filling up the landfill, it is covered carefully. First, an impenetrable mineral layer and HDPE foil are laid on top of the landfill. Subsequently, a sandy drainage layer and topsoil are placed on top, isolating the waste from the environment. Indaver foresees an aftercare period of 30 years.

Category 2 landfill for non-hazardous waste

Incineration ashes and other solid and non-hazardous waste are disposed of in the category 2 landfill, which is solely for inorganic and non-hazardous waste with a low content of organic-biodegradable substances.

Indaver has constructed the landfill on its own premises in Doel according to the best available technologies, guaranteeing responsible storage and eliminating the need for transportation to remote sites.

Which waste substances are allowed in the landfill?

  • Non-hazardous residual substances from incineration and/or treatment of waste;
  • non-hazardous waste after the necessary pre-treatment;
  • non-hazardous industrial waste;
  • exceptional waste comparable to non-hazardous industrial waste due to its nature or composition;
  • non-hazardous rubble and scrap materials.

Composition and leaching behaviour of dumped waste

  • The transported waste should be solid so that the landfill remains accessible and stable;
  • the waste should mainly be inorganic and must comply with a number of requirements concerning its composition.

Soil and groundwater protection

The landfill was built in such a way as to minimise the impact on the environment. The combination of clay layers and waterproof HDPE foils eliminates the possibility of contamination of the soil or groundwater below the landfill.

The rainwater in the landfill is pumped off via a drainage system and is reused internally as process water in the spray dryers of the grate incinerators at the same plant. An electronic leak-detection system ensures that Indaver can check regularly whether the foil is still intact.

When the landfill is full, the topside is completely covered with a protective layer that resembles the soil protection. Any subsequent spreading of waste is impossible and water can no longer penetrate the waste.
