Sustainable biowaste treatment

Treating biowaste is increasingly becoming part of Indaver’s core operations, with treated volume approaching 500,000 tonnes and ten designated facilities in Belgium and the Netherlands. The biowaste is treated to produce compost and biomass.
At its facility in Grimbergen, Indaver treats prunings, roadside grass cuttings, tree trunks and green waste that come from contractors, gardeners and local authorities.

Balance between recycling and renewable energy

Biowaste can be treated in two ways:

  • It is treated to produce high-grade compost which is then used as soil improver in agriculture and horticulture. This takes biowaste out of the waste circuit and recycles it as a high-grade end product in the materials chain.
  • It is treated to produce biomass that is used in power stations as a renewable energy source, as a substitute for fossil fuels. This avoids the CO2 emissions that occur from the use of fossil fuels.
Indaver strives to find a stable balance between these two treatment methods and all facilities are modified to produce compost as well as biomass.
