Environmentally safe storage of asbestos waste

Asbestos is now no longer used in building material, insulation material or associated material. However, in Flanders alone about 60,000 tonnes of asbestos-containing waste is released in demolition and remediation work.  Asbestos waste can be removed in accordance with the Flemish waste disposal criteria (as described in VLAREM-II legislation).
With regard to asbestos-containing waste, particular attention should be given to removal as such, pre-treatment and packaging.  Depending on the type of asbestos waste, specific packaging and delivery conditions must be complied with. The degree of “fibre release” is decisive for the bonding strength of asbestos fibres and the need for cementing.
Indaver can accept asbestos-containing waste streams at its landfill site in Antwerp and Doel and can give advice for asbestos waste projects. In situations where there are specific problems, Indaver can advise on the most suitable method of treatment, for instance:

  • asbestos cement combined with animal by-products or animal waste (e.g. after a fire in a stable);
  • asbestos cement combined with flammable waste (clearance of burnt residues, asbestos- containing floor covering)
  • asbestos cement combined with construction and demolition waste
  • asbestos cement combined with radioactive contamination
